Thanks, Steve.
Posting designs like this one makes me paranoid, because I can’t shake the feeling that it’s not original. I enjoyed the process regardless, but please let me know if somebody else beat me to the idea!
Thoughts?

New Zealand based designer Bradley Rogerson…crazy talented. I’m so in love with the packaging he’s done for Saxton Cider. Check out the details of this project (casing, label and website) here and the rest of his impressive portfolio here

Beyond Earth: A Poster Series // by: Stephen Di Donato

Today is the day I see the true potential of Tumblr. My project has spread like wildfire and completely stoked about it. If any of you are interested in receiving one of these prints please visit my Kickstarter page: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/beyondearth/beyond-earth-a-poster-series

  4. Kickstarter project launched!

As Juno left to go to Jupiter last friday, I launched my own project on Kickstarter. After a few short days, I’ve accumulated 26% of the total amount of funds needed to get it into production.

Beyond Earth (before it was named) started off as a small project. create the Mars poster. After enjoying the time I spent on it (more than my client work), I decided to keep on doing more until I had 3 posters finished. At that point, I felt something was still lacking. It needed to be bigger!

This is where I thought of Kickstarter and decided to expand the idea. I am now offering wallpapers (for iPhone, iPad and Desktop), Postcard-sized illustrations (4” x 6”) and your choice of up to 8 posters (18” x 24”)… sorry Pluto!

    please visit my kickstarter page

  5. Fix for Safari and Google Chrome running on Lion OSX

Ever since I installed Lion OS X late last week, I kept running into problems with both Google Chrome (giving me an “Aw, Snap!” message almost everytime I would load a page) and Safari (for displaying block characters). This resulted in a very frustrating internet experience for a week.

I tried all week to find an answer, by uninstalling, reinstalling the browsers (although prohibited with Safari), clearing my cookies, cache and everything else. Nothing happened, other than losing everything I saved. I created a new default profile for Google Chrome, yet that darn “Aw, Snap!” message kept appearing.

It was not until I stumbled upon this thread over at Apple’s forums did I see the light.

Basically, the cause of both of the problem is that Lion OS installs new system fonts into your computer at a different location. This causes the browser to behave oddly.

The solution: If you own Font Explorer X, in the left collumn click on “Conflicts” (with the yellow caution sign), scan for duplicates and delete them (download the trial version of FEP). If not, visit Titanium to download Onyx Beta for Lion (or another OS). Once installed, go to “Cleaning” > “Font” > Make sure the Delete font cache for System and Users is checked and “Execute”

After that, I cleaned the font caches using the following Terminal commands:

    atsutil databases -removeUser
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
    sudo atsutil databases -removeUser

(it will prompt you for your admin password after the 2nd command line was entered, if you have one)

  6. This past weekend, Jeff Finley hosted the 2nd year of WMC (Weapons of Mass Creation) Festival in Cleveland, Ohio. Although I wasn’t fortunate enough to go, I did have time to watch it live on Sunday.

One of the best talks I have seen (wether live or online) has to go to Aaron Draplin. Since the video of his talk will be posted on WMCfest website shortly, I’d rather leave it up to him to talk about his passion.

Meanwhile, however, I posted a few videos of Draplin I recently found.

  7. Beyond Earth Project

Shortly after I found the OMNI magazines (found in this post: http://stephenwroteit.tumblr.com/post/5423796379/inspiration-1), I had been secretly working out of Starbucks. From research, to sketch, to trial and error to design, I created a small series of posters of Planets, entitled Beyond Earth.

ps. Look for an update on this project. You’ll be sure to enjoy it!

  8. The Darth Vader hot air balloon made an appearance at Star Wars: The Exhibition in Brussels last week. Made in 2007 (with permission from Lucasfilm), the Darth Vader hot air balloon took 8 weeks to plan and another 8 weeks to construct before becoming what it is today. At 86 feet high, 69 feet wide, and 78 feet in depth, the Darth Vader hot air balloon is no small item in the sky. See more pictures.

  9. Inspiration #1

    OMNI magazines

Recently, I was happily surprised when stumbled upon a box full of OMNI magazines dating back from the 80’s. I immediately fell in love with both of these covers (shown above).

With this, I decided to do a bit further exploration on space/galaxies. I found a whole library on the NASA website of extremely beautiful photographs of various nebulas, black holes, and stars!

  10. FITC Toronto 2011

    FITC banner

It has been longer than I have expected since my last blog post. This is due to the lack of time I had recently, notably last week when I attended FITC Toronto 2011 (10th anniversary).

It was my first experience attending any large event focusing on design and development. My expectations were limited and definitely skewed from reality – I had a blast! I got to meet (and hang out with) amazing people along the way, saw uplifting and inspirational talks from some of the best in the industry and drank free beer at random hours of the day.
